At The Kitchen Table

Mugs of hot coffee
signaled time-out
from our troubles
from the events of the day
from problems at work
for a while at least it was safe

We could share our dreams
our childhood memories
our hopes for the kids
and occasionally
we could talk about us

And the coffee
hot and black
sweetened by love
smoothed the way

Then one morning
steaming mug cupped in your hand
you told me you were leaving
