Lamentations Redux

Gnarled and bitter
necks permanently twisted
from peering over their shoulders
seeing only the past
fearing the morning
hating the evening
yesterday their only solace

Huddled together
they wait
wasting away
clutching guns and
leather bound chapters
watching winter’s night
close in

Sworn by oath
their patriotic duty
to repel the assault
that is surely coming
that will bring them down
and with them their
city on the hill

Pax Romana
Rule Britannia
The American Way
they sing of the good old days
chant love it or leave it
profess their right to arms
distrust all who do not concur

Echoes of ancient Troy
still in the blood
