Death and Sundays

Nearby
always nearby
a wall
a curtain
a door
down the block
across the street

I don’t know
no one knows
does it make a difference
you know it is there
somewhere
sometime
we all do

Some turn their back
some pretend
some huddle in fear

Some light candles
some pray
some burn incense

And some sing and dance
anyway

Hard held beliefs
or wild speculations
no matter
always close
never knowing
forever wondering

I don’t know
no one knows
does it make a difference
you know it is there
somewhere
sometime
we all do

So thump the basket
if you must
jingle the coins
so they notice
then pass it on
but my advice
save your money
for ice cream
later in the afternoon
