There Should Be Music

I see the treetops sway overhead
lying here in the afternoon sun
I never noticed before
how much their tops
move in the wind

I didn’t really want to go
but patriotism, call of duty
bound me I assured her
while secretly imagining
a great adventure

Nearby mortars pump death
into the surrounding assault
earth throbs beneath my back
sky darkens overhead
I cannot feel the breeze
I cannot feel my legs

Why isn’t there music?

I thought there’d be music
