An Hourglass Half Dark

It has a place on the shelf
among the books and photos
a gift from long ago

Its shape
smooth and feminine
easy to notice
easy to watch

A thief sometimes
if I am not careful
so mesmerizing
it steals my minutes
my days
I try not to stare too long

An hourglass half dark
never showing how much remains
only what has gone
it drizzles slowly
vibrating with life
my life

And I sit
sometimes for hours
watching the growing pyramid
of memories and moments
all the while knowing
that this time I spend
these memories I watch
are unrecoverable

Yet still I sit
watching it drain
my gift
my life

What to do?
