I am sleepy today
last night
in the middle of the night
after a long day of pondering
the inherent goodness or deviltry
of humanity
of neighbors and friends
of family and country
late when Pollyanna was asleep
and my demons occupied
I awoke to a voice of seeming clarity
whispering in the dark
“Yesssss!” it murmured
then giggled and went silent
and I could not fall asleep again
